Ford "Falcon Six"

A few quick notes regarding camshaft selection for a Falcon Six engine. These engines came from the factory with a cast in log style intake manifold, with the exception of the Australian 2 barrel head. In log style heads, all of the airflow from the entire engine must be drawn through a single 1bbl carb opening - which acts as a restrictor plate would in a performance engine. Because of this 'restrictor,' the intake flow is much lower than it should be relative to the exhaust flow, and in the case of an unmodified small log cylinder head the exhaust actually outflows the intake with over 100% exhaust to intake flow. Large log heads are much better, with the increased intake flow bringing the exhaust percentage to 80-85%. When using a stock or very small aftermarket camshaft this won't present any issues, but with a large cam it can lead to overscavenging and reversion.

What this translates to for camshaft selection is that Falcon Sixes with log heads tend to work best with single pattern camshafts. The only time you need to consider running a dual plane camshaft is if you have the Aussie head, or a heavily modified large log head with a true 2bbl conversion.
